 Hi ,

Today we are going to see what is 'process flow diagram' with an example.

But before that we would go through some of the terms .

Process :- Means any set of  activities that is carried out intentionally to give some useful or required result. So process is basically task of many things together that are connected to each other. In order to carry out task, some things need to be in hand, which are termed as input. After getting task completed you will get result which is termed as 'output'.

For example :- Inspection of finished engineering goods. Inspector starts checking finished jobs with the measuring instruments like tape, Vernier calliper, micro meter or snap gages or any other measuring tools. After inspection , we come to know the finished good is okay or not.

Here Inspection is a process. In order to carry out this process following inputs are needed.

a) Qualified Inspector.

b) Tested /Calibrated measuring instruments.

c) Fully finished jobs.

After carrying out inspection process, we get the following output.

a) Finished Goods are dimensionally, visually Okay or Not Okay.

b) Sorted Okay and Faulty jobs.

c) Proof of inspection in form of inspection report , which gives confidence to production team.

d) Customer satisfaction and trust.

So now for me, being sole owner of  a small placement service, I wanted to have process of placement service. For that , I divided activities , like

1) Enquiry from candidates.

2) Interview  with candidate and getting to know candidate.

3) Explain the placement terms and conditions to the candidate.

4) Decision of candidate whether to register or not with my placement service.

5) Sorting of  candidates resumes as 'Registered ' or ' Not Registered'.

6) Keeping aside non-registered resumes separately.

7) Giving interview calls to registered and suitable candidates as per available vacancy.

8) Giving candidates interview tips if needed.

9) Interview and selection.

10) End of process for that candidate for time being.

Here you will see there are two points start and end of process which are indicated by separate symbols. All other activities/process parts are indicated by rectangular shape. There are some points, when I have to wait , like if candidate is going to register or not. These waiting periods are indicated by decision symbol with question mark in it.

Also we have to club some of the activities in order to make presentable process flow diagram. Basically process flow diagram is a pictorial view of all processes and flow of process is indicated by a box connector of forward arrow.

So I drafted out very basic process flow chart for my placement activity. The process flow chart is not complete ,as I have to add some points like :

What if any of organisation needs some very specific skilled candidates and I do not have that candidates resume in my data bank. I will add this activity later on as I get adequate time to work on it and I will update flow chart accordingly. Please till time,  find below basic process flow diagram, which will give you an idea how to start with it.
